The Volonov Vampire Clan, having been granted amnesty from the Las Vegas City Control Council, moves everyone to the Northern Rocky Mountains in Lower Canada, across from the Montana state line. Princess Selene is ecstatic about the wooded surroundings, with its fresh mountain springs and dense, forested mountain sides. She orders the clan to begin building a safe haven for the clan, where humans will not infringe on their lives ever again. With the blood serum her scientists have developed, the Black Guard soldiers and the clan's growing citizens can subsist on the blood of animals. Their future seems to be a satisfying and secure one. But there are those in the clan who would go back to the old ways and wage war on the hapless humans who inhabit the lower mountain ranges, drinking human blood, as they were created to do.
Along with the vampires, much to their surprise, lives the northern tribes of shape shifters, human animals who can shift shape into anmials. The werefolk learn of the migration of the vampires into their lands and instantly begin to hate the newcomers. The werecreatures have inhabited the mountain upper slopes for hundreds of years, and would not allow interlopers in their forests. Can these two species learn to live together, or will they fight for territory and wage bloody war with their enimies? Can the Volonov Vampires find safe haven in the mountains? Can Princess Selene lead her people to safety and peace?
